As a single mom to a special needs son with pediatric bipolar 1 disorder, Tourettes, cPTSD, and schizoaffective disorder I can say: there is absolutely a reason we don't have weapons in our house ... not because I'm afraid he will do something, but because, when he is dysregulated (even though he hasn't ever harmed anyone), he can be destructive. Having a gun just makes self harm and harm toward others even more possible. The mother is absolutely to blame for this. Parents: if you have a child with severe mental illness, get them into EMDR therapy and start working with them on mindfulness, ACT, and CBT. Take free classes online to learn about how your child's mental illness affects their brain. Learn their patterns so you can predict when their highs or lows will occur. Be mindful of their tells and actively redirect. If you don't know how, or if you're unwilling to live a highly regimented, trauma-informed life with your kid —send them to someone who can and will care for them in the way they deserve.

In Oregon it’s completely legal for a parent to buy a long gun and transfer ownership to your minor kid without that child getting any kind of permit or background check. That law needs to change immediately.

This is the type of thing that gun regulations could address. Just educating parents that it’s not okay to buy guns for kids and not have them secured. And if the kid is a teen, they still need to be secure, do you, the parent, have the capacity to secure it. The 2nd Amendment does not say anything about children having the right to bear arms.
