Have you ever noticed that some people try to create connection through criticism? Instead of building friendships through shared interests, vulnerability, or positive experiences, they try to bond with others by criticizing, mocking, or discrediting a third person. This is sometimes described as negative social bonding, and it can also involve a form of triangulation. Essentially, someone tries to create an alliance with you by encouraging you to dislike someone else. The unspoken message is, “We’re on the same team because we both think that person is terrible.” Why do people do this? There are five possible psychological motivations: 1. Insecurity: Putting someone else down can temporarily make a person feel better about themselves. 2. Fear of vulnerability: Criticizing someone else can feel safer than opening up and sharing personal feelings. 3. Need for belonging: Having a common enemy can create an immediate sense of connection and acceptance. 4. Social competition: Discrediting another person can be an attempt to elevate one’s own status or reputation. 5. Emotional immaturity: Some people haven’t developed healthier ways to create closeness, so they rely on gossip, criticism, or shared negativity. Of course, not everyone who criticizes someone is doing this. Sometimes we have legitimate concerns about another person’s behavior, and discussing those concerns can be healthy and necessary. The important distinction is whether we’re discussing someone’s behavior to understand a problem or solve it, or whether we’re using criticism to manufacture closeness. Healthy relationships are built on shared values, mutual respect, trust, and genuine connection, not shared contempt for someone else. Have you ever experienced this? Have you noticed someone trying to get closer to you by encouraging you to dislike another person? I’d love to hear your thoughts. #relationships #relationshiptips #relationshipcoach #relationshipadviceforwomen
