Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old teacher, was killed on October 15, 2026, while heroically attempting to stop a gunman during a mass shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. According to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, Megan threw her cellphone at the 16-year-old shooter before tackling him inside a special needs classroom. Her courageous actions helped slow the attack before an armed bystander, local parent Kaylub Giamanco, intervened and fatally shot the gunman. Tragically, the shooting claimed the lives of Megan and three children, ages 5, 8, and 11. Megan grew up in Bend, Oregon, graduated from Mountain View High School in 2019, and earned her degree from Boise State University in 2023. She spent years working as a substitute teacher at Silver Rail Elementary before finally securing her first full-time teaching contract in August 2026. Teaching at Silver Rail was her absolute dream job, and she was finally beginning the career she had worked so hard to achieve. Her family remembered her as funny, opinionated, and deeply compassionate. She always fought for the underdog and those with special needs, standing up for people who needed someone in their corner. Megan also coached volleyball for the Central Oregon Volleyball Club. During her first season, she voluntarily gave up her coaching salary so children from families who couldn't afford the fees could still have the opportunity to play. Her generosity showed just how much she cared about others. On that tragic Thursday afternoon, Megan found herself facing a nightmare no teacher should ever have to experience. Instead of thinking only of her own safety, she acted to protect the children in her classroom. Megan was only 25. She had finally achieved her dream, and she should have had decades ahead of her to teach, coach, inspire children, and create beautiful memories with the people she loved. The most heartbreaking part is that her dream had only just begun. Her family should have been celebrating her future, watching her grow in the career she loved, and looking forward to countless more years together. Instead, they are left with a devastating loss and memories of a life taken far too soon. They will remember more than her final act of bravery.
