Even now, I feel the tension build the moment this question is asked. “How are you?” Because what do you say? “Fine” feels like a lie. Yet, the truth feels heavy and like way too much information for the checkout line. And sometimes… you genuinely DON’T KNOW. I’ve lost track of how many moments where I could be functioning. Talking. Getting things done. And underneath all of that there might be sadness, anger, fear, exhaustion, loneliness… sometimes several at once. So I’d default to: “I’m okay.” Not necessarily because I was hiding anything. Sometimes I just didn’t have the bandwidth to sort through everything I was experiencing in that moment to could give someone an accurate answer. That distinction matters. Because after a major loss, people will ask you how you’re doing A LOT. And it can start to feel like you’re supposed to know. You’re supposed to have an update. Better. Worse. Good day. Bad day. But emotions aren’t a status report. Sometimes the most accurate answer is: “I don’t know yet.” Then later, when you have a minute, get more specific with yourself. Not… “How am I doing?” Try: “What am I feeling right now?” Sad. Lonely. Irritated. Scared. Relieved. Numb. Whatever is actually there. Because “How am I doing?” asks you to summarize your whole damn existence. Naming what you’re feeling asks you to notice THIS moment. Much smaller. Much more useful. And something you can actually work with. If grief has made “How are you?” ridiculously complicated… Remember, you don’t owe anyone a perfectly packaged answer. Want a tool to help when things are heavy? Grab our emotional pivot. It can help you make sense of what’s happening inside so you can start feeling more clear, calm and in control.
