If your thinking of going to watch this movie: This is a quote from the director speaking about Marianne - “I wouldn’t say I explicitly see it as a queer romance, but there are aspects of it, particularly Marianne’s character, where we are showing a character who is rejecting the status quo. If we were to make that story now, then she probably would be a queer character.” An FYI for those interested in the casting decisions, inspirations and thought pattern of the director whilst making this film. “Mr Palmer” in the movie is also a woman, dressed as a man.
