@latincity_: There are certain songs that hit differently depending on the moment. Los Tigres del Norte made their Tiny Desk debut and chose to open with “Somos Más Americanos,” their 2001 anthem about migration, borders, Mexican identity, and what it means to belong in the United States. 🇲🇽🇺🇸 For decades, Los Tigres have used their music to tell the stories of immigrants, working-class families, people separated by borders, and communities that rarely get to hear their experiences represented in mainstream American culture. So opening one of the biggest music platforms in the country with this song was not a random choice. Before they even started playing, NPR’s Félix Contreras spoke about what immigrant communities are experiencing right now and credited Los Tigres del Norte with giving those communities a voice through their music. More than 50 years into their career, they’re still telling the same stories because those stories are still relevant. Music can entertain us. But it can also preserve history, tell our stories, and remind people that our communities have always been part of this country.
