@djmaxojrnke5: New York City Records Historic Lows in Murders and Shootings Through September 2026 New York City recorded its lowest numbers of murders, shooting incidents and shooting victims for the first nine months of any year in recorded history, according to crime statistics announced by the New York Police Department on October 6, 2026. From January through September, the city recorded 203 murders, compared with 253 during the same period in 2025. The total also fell below the previous record low of 215 murders, set in 2017. Shooting incidents declined to 489, down from 553 during the first nine months of 2025. The number of shooting victims fell to 594, compared with 694 during the same period last year. Police officials also reported that the figures for the third quarter, covering July through September, reached record lows. The encouraging figures extended beyond shootings and homicides. Major crime across the city declined by 6.6% year to date, falling from 92,057 reported incidents in 2025 to 86,023 in 2026. Every borough recorded a decrease, with the Bronx seeing the largest reduction at 11.9%. Major crime also dropped 9.4% during the third quarter alone. Public housing communities also experienced significant reductions in several categories. Murders fell by 33.3%, shooting incidents decreased by 35.5%, and robberies dropped by 18.5% compared with the same period last year. However, not every crime category showed improvement. Confirmed hate crimes increased by 12.9%, reported rapes rose by 3.7%, and transit crime edged up by 0.9%. Assaults on police officers and other public employees also increased by 7.7%. Officials noted that some rape reports involved incidents that had occurred in earlier years. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who took office in January, welcomed the decline and said his administration intended to build on the progress by continuing to invest in crime-prevention strategies. He also acknowledged the work of violence interrupters and crisis management teams in addressing the underlying causes of violence. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised NYPD officers for their work during a year that included significant operational demands. She described the results as historic and said the department would continue its efforts to reduce violence and keep residents safe. The latest figures continue a recent downward trend in shootings. In 2025, New York City had already recorded a then-historic low in shooting incidents during the first nine months of the year. The 2026 totals have now set new records across murders, shooting incidents and shooting victims for the same period. Although the statistics offer encouraging signs, city officials face continuing challenges in areas where reported crime has increased. The NYPD said the figures were preliminary and could be revised as further analysis is completed. #newyork City, #nyc , #crimeprevention , #lawenforcement , #crime
