@bymuseum: The Gulf Stream (1899, reworked by 1906) By Winslow Homer 📍 The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Winslow Homer turns a survival scene into something much more uncertain. A stranded man lies in a damaged boat while sharks circle below and a waterspout forms in the distance. Yet his expression gives us no clear answer about what he is feeling. Then Homer adds one small possibility of escape: a distant ship on the horizon. It was added later. Hope is present, but Homer leaves it almost impossibly far away. Howzert Spades :
He's an escaped slave. He looks spitefully toward where and what he escaped. He doesn't care about the dangers (rough sea, sharks, waterspout or death) cause they're better than being enslaved. The background ship going in the opposite direction isn't hope, cause it would bring him back to where he tries to distance himself from. Freedom, is goal or death by Poseidon, but no turning back.
