@builtwiththis: Stop letting your builder put your WiFi on a closet shelf. Network closet + CAT6 to every camera, TV and access point before drywall. Pre-drywall checklist in bio. #smarthome #customhome #newconstruction
I installed hard pipes into accessible ceilings from my data rack. Future proofed with pull strings. I could replace all of my LV wiring in 2 hours. Cost me maybe 100 bucks in PVC

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT LET THEM STAPLE THE CABLE OR YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO UPGRADE IT WITHOUT RIPPING OUT YOUR SHEETROCK

ITT: people who know how networks function, arguing with those that don’t, arguing with folks perfectly happy to settle for less…. Me? 10gbe cat 7 runs everywhere with Unifi gear connecting everything, including a couple WiFi 7 access points, because not only do I know what I’m doing, I love overpaying for a clean UI and easy connectivity.

has anyone here ever heard of wifi 6, 6e, 7, or 8? even on wifi 6 I can pretty easily maintain between 1-2gbps link speed. on 7 I maintain between 3-5gbps with afc in my home. use some of that money to upgrade your electronics to more modern wireless standards

idk about cameras, but in a two gamer household both mine and my husband's consoles are hard wired to the network. we just have cables all over the place, so this is a good idea in my opinion.

Cat 8 is better. Also run fiber, it will be the next level. It is faster.

Sounds great until it’s been 10 years and now Cat 6 is the equivalent of Coax today. Technology advances so fast you will never keep up.

Unpopular opinion from a Systems Administrator: Most of this is over kill for most regular homes. If you’re doing a new build, try to plan ahead & run some extra conduit for data drops. But generally WiFi is to the point where most hardwire is unnecessary. The better idea is to plan ahead for your WiFi & actually plan for where your APs will be. I would say run 2.5GB to each AP now & choose robust hardware for your WiFi APs.

I typically charge $150 per network run after drywall is up. So, there is a number to compare. That includes the cable, the network ends and the wall plate.
