A wormhole is a hypothetical tunnel in the fabric of spacetime, mathematically permitted by Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Structurally, it consists of two spherical "mouths" located in different parts of the universe, linked together by a central "throat." Unlike black holes, a traversable wormhole lacks a point-of-no-return horizon, theoretically allowing physical objects to pass safely through it in both directions. The primary scientific challenge regarding wormholes is their extreme instability. Under the crushing force of gravity, such a cosmic tunnel would naturally collapse instantly into a singularity. To keep the throat open for safe passage, it must be stabilized by a hypothetical substance known as exotic matter, which possesses negative energy density and exerts an antigravitational push to hold the walls apart. In modern astrophysics, wormholes remain purely theoretical since exotic matter has not yet been observed on a cosmic scale. Nevertheless, scientists continue to search for them in the deep universe. Today, researchers are developing methods to detect wormholes by looking for the distinct ways they would bend light from distant stars (gravitational lensing) or by analyzing unique gravitational wave signatures that set them apart from standard black holes. #blackhole #interstellar #education #physics
