@natleedesigns: Before air-conditioning, Southern homes had to work with the climate. The dogtrot house was one answer. Common across the Deep South, this traditional house plan placed two enclosed sections beneath one roof, separated by an open, covered passage. That breezeway offered shade and helped air circulate through the home. But this architecture is personal to me, too. My great-grandmother Mama Chris had a Dogtrot home in Kemper Springs, near Meridian, Mississippi. Exploring the history of Southern homes helps me connect the buildings we admire today with the people who lived in them. These houses remind us that good design isn't only about appearance. It's about how people lived, what the climate demanded, and how a home served its family. Would you bring the dogtrot back into modern home design? My great great grandparents had a dogtrot house my grandmother said. They had a sleeping porch as well. Oh I wish I could have seen it.

It was also to separate the kitchen from sleeping areas during the summer. Many of these breezeways were eventually closed in to make a large farmhouse and some are still standing today and you'd never even know it.

So when I was little, I'll say about 7 yrs old, my great grandma had a house like this across the street from her old house. It was still well put together but empty. Im pretty sure abandoned cuz their was leaves and sticks in both sides of the house. My cousin n I would go play in it and hang out on the porch. I felt safe there. Now I'm 32 and still think about this house from time to time. I even dreamt about going back to it and when I got there I opened one door that just led me to another door. I asked my grandmother about the house and she said that it was tore down because it was so old. I never knew who lived there once before but the feeling that house gave me was comforting 💕

I had an extremely vivid dream about a home like this for weeks when I was a teen. Like it wouldn’t let up, I ended up drawing it out to get it out of my head. Now I know what it was called, cool lol

My great grandparents’ house was like that (he cleared the land and built it 1915), but they quickly enclosed the middle part for more living space. Grandpa installed an indoor bathroom in the 1950s. Some cousin lives there today
