@nealkshah: It is one of the most painful and common things families go through: siblings who grew up together quietly drift apart, or even stop speaking entirely, once their parents are gone. Why does it happen? Often, a parent was the “glue,” the one who kept everyone connected, mediated the old tensions, and gave the family a reason to gather. When that center is gone, siblings who only related through the parent can simply fall away. Grief hits everyone differently too, and when siblings judge each other’s way of mourning, resentment builds fast. Then come the hot buttons: inheritance, dividing possessions, and the deep bitterness when one sibling did most of the caregiving while the others stayed distant. Researchers have found something telling, that conflict after a parent’s death is usually preceded by conflict before it, so old wounds resurface with nothing left to hold them back. The good news is that this is not inevitable. Naming the loss openly, grieving together, dividing responsibilities and belongings fairly and early, and sometimes leaning on a counselor can protect the bond. Because losing your parents should not mean losing your family too. Follow for more on family and aging, and share this with a sibling. #Siblings #Family #Grief

I am the primary caregiver for both my again parents. I’m already bitter. And I just know when they pass, I will not have a relationship with my siblings. I’ve asked for help. None has come.

Ever noticed that those diligently taking care of their parents are usually the black sheep or those that were never loved/ favorite of their parents?

Happened to my family. My sister and I took on all the caregiver duties when my father was sick and eventually in hospice. 8 months before he passed he asked me to take him to his lawyer. He ultimately went to see him to change his will/trust. He gave my sister and I a majority of his estate. He was really hurt the last year of his life that his other kids hardly stopped by. He let them know through the trust how much they hurt him. My siblings were pissed but they had their chance to do the right thing.

Being my Mom's caregiver the last few years has changed the way I see and feel about my siblings. I'm the youngest and they have done nothing this whole time, rarely see or call her. They're not going to hurt like me and my anticipatory grief has been solo.

I’m going through this now. I took care of my mother for years and got zero help from any of my siblings and I also had to put my life on hold to do so. It was and always will be the best time of my life. I miss her every single day.

my Mom’s favorites doesn’t want her at their home and now she stays with me just because i don’t have my own children. I was the one she badmouthed all the time, even cursed while growing up and now i ended up taking care of her. Im really torn between trying to be nice to her and be the good child and the resentment i had for her.

so true, I went through this 16 years ago. Second youngest out of 5 boys. Lived near my mum to take care of her. She passed away and some wanted to take over. I only now speak to my eldest brother and have no relationship with the others. very sad, but that is life. I am happy and my wife and children are my priority. it is good to be the second youngest in my past life but the most important in my curent life.

I was the caregiver for my MIL. My husband and I carried that heavy grieving, but his brother felt pissed off because she didn't wait for him to get her, yet we were telling him to come here 2 weeks before things went down hill. He even had the nerve to badmouthing her as they sealed the niche (ashes). My husband was so hurt, he terminated the relation with his brother forever. We had a hard first 3 months after the passing. We were grieving different. I was grieving her while she was alive (per nurse practiotioner). The minute she passed away I became the stronger person to help my husband. We just had a two week road trip. We needed that to reset ourselves and move on with our lives while remembering her prior to what we saw on her last month of life. My husband refuses to talk to that man and I don't blame him. I regret asking my husband to reach out to his brother because he betrayed my husband when he needed the support from his older brother. I hope he dies alone and his kids leave him alone on his lasts days.

duties towards parents can never be equal. i think those who take care of parents should do so on their own accord. and not expect anything otherwise parents must get caregivers

When my dad died me and my siblings bonded more. We also spent more time with each other, eating out, travel etc. It was surprisingly amazing coz growing up we really dont liek each other. We bully each other and hate each other. Im just grateful our relationship got stronger and glued together. We all miss our dad the same and we always laugh how our dad punishes us each😂😭 we were chaotic back then and our dad is the "discipliner" 😭 but he fails to coz he is soft as cotton😭

all comes down to the parents and how they raised their children. We had amazing parents! Both gone, and we're still solid!

I’ve always said that my sibling who is doing all the heavy lifting should get everything and makes all decisions they are comfortable with. I’m there to support.
