Every fall, without fail, I pick up acorns. I have absolutely no idea why. 😂 Today, while waiting on my daughter, I was walking around when I spotted the first ones of the season scattered across the ground. Well, naturally, I had to stop and gather a handful. And I’m particular about my acorns. I like the big ones, the ones with their little hats still attached, and finding two together is practically a jackpot. 🌰 Later, in the car, I was showing my daughter my collection and explaining which ones I liked best. Somewhere in that conversation, I caught myself wondering why I’ve been doing this every fall for as long as I can remember. Who taught me to look for them? Did somebody show me when I was little? Or did I just start picking them up one day and never stop? Then I got to thinking about the oak tree. All spring and summer, it puts its energy into growing these little acorns. Come fall, it lets every last one go. No fuss. No hanging on to what took months to produce. A few might become mighty oaks. Others will fill little squirrel cheeks and help carry them through winter. Plenty will return to the ground and become part of the soil. And next year, the tree will do it all over again. Generation after generation. Funny how much of life works that way. We spend seasons building things, learning things, carrying responsibilities, and holding on to what we’ve worked hard to accomplish. But there comes a time when even good things have served their purpose in our hands. Letting go doesn’t mean the effort was wasted. What leaves our hands may still have somewhere important to go. And then there’s my daughter, sitting beside me, listening to her mother explain the fine art of picking out acorns. 😂 I wonder if she’ll find herself doing the same thing one October afternoon, years from now, without remembering exactly why. Maybe that’s how a lot of what we pass down begins. Not with a lesson, but with somebody watching us do the little things year after year. “A time to keep, and a time to cast away.” — Ecclesiastes 3:6 (KJV) Perhaps there’s wisdom in knowing when to do both. And apparently, there’s still a time for me to bring home a pocketful of acorns. 🍂 Spirit & Soil Outpost | Fill Your Soul Saturday
