@msdanielledonofrio: The good girl in an enmeshed, dysfunctional family is used and abused until she reaches her breaking point and walks away. The family wonders what happened. Why isn’t she coming around anymore? Something must be wrong with her. She must be mad about that one petty thing. How dare she abandon us and make us look bad! When that’s the narrative surrounding a person’s departure, what room is there for her to ever come back? There is none. She walked away to save herself, and they closed the door behind her. Not that she was coming back anyway, but don’t let the system fool you into thinking they wish to reconcile and would welcome her with open arms. No, family systems like these don’t allow dissent, and they will need to use her as an example. They were only ever using her anyway, and their reaction makes that painfully clear. So, the next time you meet someone who’s escaped an entire family system and begun rebuilding her life from scratch without any support or familiarity, consider her strength and bravery rather than defaulting to the image painted by rumors. Do you really think she flippantly chose to leave everything and start over? Or is it more likely she had no other choice? Women who’ve been through this know the answer, and I’m one of those women.
