Places that are designated as a historical landmark have very strict regulations about what renovations are allowed & how they do them.

One of the main fixes is rebuilding the entire foundation of the hotel, which is the WHOLE block it’s on built on. They are going underground which is going to take them years. It’s not a quick process and the adding on all of the cosmetic upgrades it’s gonna be a huge undertaking. I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes more than 4 years unfortunately 😩

It’s a historic landmark they have tons of rule to follow. The good news is it should look the same. Little concerned it will open again

All buildings need renovation and repair to keep them going long term. I think this is a facade restoration which is why it will take 4 years.

It’s a massive historic building. 4 years is actually a really solid timeline

I worked at a 100+ year hotel and the elevators took 3+ years to renovate alone. So even if it’s just that, it’s puts a big wrench in the whole operation.

Considering how the City of New York has allowed the most beautiful homes and historic buildings to be torn down, I am happy to see they are preserving this world renowned hotel.

Perfect?! Have you been in it? It needs an update. You do realize there are things that go on behind the scenes that also need to be taken care of? Is four years excessive? Yes but the Waldorf did this as well

It’s a restoration, you need to be slow and methodical to protect the integrity of it all and it’s also a massive project and a big building

Oooooh wait, I actually heard there’s a reason for the scaffolding a few years ago and I can’t remember the specifics but it’s actually not related to construction / renovation and that’s why all the big hotels have had theirs up for years with clearly no crews working on the exterior at any point in time. I wish I remembered. It’s some kind of loophole for a NYC code that takes liability off of them.

As someone who stayed in a suite in the past few years - it’s gorgeous and the rooms that are untouched are dated but gorgeous. I would assume they are not only doing updating but doing some necessary repair work. Some areas do smell a bit moldy.
