@iamthatenglishteacher: What’s the difference between a lawyer and an attorney or an attorney and a lawyer. People often use the words lawyer and attorney interchangeably, but the distinction can depend on licensing (passing the bar exam) and how the terms are used. A law degree shows that someone studied law; passing the bar and meeting JD requirements are separate steps that may be required to practice law. This vocabulary lesson looks at the terms lawyer, attorney, attorney-at-law, counsel, legal practitioner, litigator, solicitor, and barrister, and why the details matter about legal credentials #lawschool #Attorney #Lawyer #LawTok #LearnonTikTokContest

Lawyer and attorney are the same thing if you look at ABA model rules they use lawyer and attorney to both refer to someone practicing the law and the ethical duties

I distinctly remember her posting this same thing quite a while ago and I commented on it bc there js no distinction in US between attorney and lawyer. This is slightly improved but still somewhat misleading.

Why is this up for debate. JD is the law degree before you can practice law you must pass the bar and be sworn in as to practice law. Once this occurs you can be called an attorney or a lawyer. There is no calling yourself an attorney or lawyer if those things haven’t occurred. 🙄

I’m an attorney in the US. The American Bar Association considers lawyer and attorney to mean the exact same thing without any distinction and there’s been several court cases establishing this as well. Other foreign jurisdictions may have distinctions between solicitor and barrister but the US is not the case.

IF you have graduated law school as a JM or JD, then you’re a lawyer. Yet, a JM wouldn’t be a paralegal because as the commonwealth attorney advised it’s not equivalent because you’re the middle person between the three components (Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Courts)

I would also point out that most lawyers will not self-designate as an Esquire because it’s historically used as a term of respect to another lawyer. When I see a lawyer put it on their own name, it sounds ignorant and arrogant

Lawyer and Atty are the same in the US. We don’t draw a distinction the way the UK does with barrister/solicitor. In the ooooooold days there was a difference. But today, the American Bar and state bars treat lawyer/atty synonymously. With love from a licensed member of the bar. 💖
