@lauraelizabethschroeder: For reference my kids are 7, 6, 4 & 10 months. So the older 3 are what I'm trying to figure out! I genuinely don't want to disregard the things they love but we cannot keep everything or we'll get buried 😂 I also do not want to just do it behind their backs at their ages, especially my older 2! Any ideas would be amazing!! #declutteringtips #declutterchallenge #toydecluttering #cleanwithme #declutteryourhouse
When it came to my kids things I would have them help and tell them we are making a pile of things for other kids and families that might need it or love it more. We would then take their toys and books to shelters, schools, or I’d find people on Facebook or Nextdoor app and they would help me donate them.

I made my first help, anything broke goes in the trash the things that we don’t play with that are good we donated or sold and he got the money for something he wanted

I recommend to clients to pause toys. Go ahead and box up what they don’t touch much anymore, and if they ask for/about the toys then of course open the box back up again. It’s a little out of sight out of mind kind of thing 📦 it has worked for a lot of moms I’ve worked with!

I don’t know. Mum would declutter our stuff every time we moved house and honestly I never noticed - I presume she knew what we had stopped playing with.

My rule with my sons items are broken/dirty immediately go in the trash. If it’s something that they haven’t touched in a year, I get rid of that too. Every year I have him also help me go through all of his toys before Christmas. I tell him we are donating them to kids whose parents may not be able to afford to buy them Christmas presents. So he is really willing to help. Basically I go through everything and make 2 piles of clean/useable and dirty/broken. Dirty/broken goes in the trash. Then I have him help go through the clean pile for donating.

I think anything broken should be removed immediately and anything that they’ve outgrown. Tell them the clothes that they have grown out of are going to children that need clothes and that the toys are going to children who don’t have enough toys. You can get them involved in the process and for the things getting thrown away tell them you are making room for the new stuff they will get at Xmas time. If you need to please show them a video of disadvantaged children, it helps them to empathise and understand better

First thing for me is we don’t keep things that are broken. They get a limited space of some sort (like a bin, shelf system, whatever you have) and they load in the toys from most favorite on down. When the space is gone, the rest of the toys go. It was easier on some of my kids to bin the overage things up. But also those are, in my experience, the clingiest ages 😅

We started when the kids were 4 &5 (they are 5 and 7 now) I give them a box about twice a year (especially before Christmas) and explain that in order to get new, they need to create space. We can’t get more space so we need to get rid of what we no longer want or play with in order to create space for new. We also explain that we donate to places that give to kids that don’t have the luxury of so many toys. Now they bring items to me they no longer want so we can donate.

i don’t have kids so take this with a grain of salt but my parents would basically say we were helping other kids and ask us to pick one toy, one shirt, one pants etc. to give to another kid and a lot of times we would end up with more and i was super attached to stuff but feeling like i was helping someone else helped me

We have bins/baskets for categories of toys (animal figures, characters, vehicles, stuffed animals, etc) and when they get too full that toys are falling out they have to decide what to get rid of. Even though I’d love to get rid of all the cheap, random toys/trinkets they too have a designated basket. Occasionally a toy will go “missing” or be donated to grandparents house, but that is rare 😂 if the toy is worth selling, they get the money to spend on something else also

I’ve found that using the language of “are we ready to let this go” or “move on from” helps a lot. There’s also a good bluey episode 😅

Start by getting rid of broken things. Things that don’t fit. Then separate the things that you know they don’t use/play with. Introduce them back to them to let them rediscover them. If they love them then keep them. If they don’t explain to them what you’re doing, and ask if they’d like to also eliminate somethings they’re no longer using. If you’re not 100% sure out them away for a little to see if they’d ask for them if they don’t let them go. Including them is a great way for them to understand and they’ll eventually do it themselves.

I just pay attention to what my son plays with. if I haven't notice him play with something for a while I talk to him about it and we get rid of it. if hes dead set on keeping it we do. anything broken or stained gets tossed though.
