Caring for wildlife comes at a human cost that is rarely seen. Behind every animal admitted to a wildlife hospital are people who dedicate their lives to helping animals in need. They experience the joy of successful releases, but also the heartbreak of suffering, loss, and difficult decisions. As National Bullying Prevention Month comes to an end and we approach International Stress Awareness Week, we want to talk about the mental health of those working in wildlife rehabilitation and veterinary care. These professions can take an enormous emotional toll. Research has shown that veterinary professionals face a significantly higher risk of suicide than the general population. Over the past few months, our own staff at Ojai Raptor Center have experienced online bullying, harassment, death threats, and even threats of kidnapping. These experiences don't simply disappear when someone finishes their shift and goes home. They affect spouses, children, and families who worry about the safety of their loved ones. Disagreement and criticism are part of public life. Threats and intimidation should never be. We want to thank our staff, and everyone working in wildlife rehabilitation and veterinary care, for the difficult and often emotionally exhausting work they do every day. We see the dedication it takes, and we know it isn't always easy. Please remember that the people caring for animals need care and support too. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Support is available 24/7. #BeKind
