Together the rings stretch nearly 200 feet across, and one toppled stone measures a staggering 27 feet long. But here's the key: they were never built in the ocean at all. Around 5,500 years ago, this was dry land, and the sea sat some 16 feet lower — then, over the centuries, the rising water slowly crept up and swallowed half the monument whole. At the base of the stones, archaeologists found fragments of more than 500 clay vessels, thought to have once burned incense in some forgotten ritual.
