Lake smirked as he pushed me inside and shut the door. Heat curled low in my stomach as I used my forearm to shove him away from me. He looked harder than the last time I’d seen him, what, over a year ago? His cheeks were more hollow, giving his face a more chiseled look. White-blond hair was windswept away from his face except for a few chunks that hung down into his eyes. Kaleidoscope eyes that burned as much as they tempted. “What are you doing here?” Please tell me he wasn’t the masked man. I knew he wasn’t, but the thought still fluttered through my mind. One side of his mouth tipped up, but there was nothing friendly about it. “Not going to ask how I found you? Not going to apologize for walking out on us?” He was an idiot if he thought he could manipulate me. Growing up on the streets, and then through foster care, I was very well acquainted with all the tricks. As for leaving, they should have expected me to walk out. “I have somewhere I need to be. So whatever reason you—” “Oh, I know all about what’s going on. Ask yourself, if we know where you are, what else do we know?” He leaned forward and his eyes glinted in the light coming from the back window. I stiffened. I’d never liked being controlled. Or told what to do. I glanced over his shoulder at the door. He was too close. Even if I managed to get around him, I’d never be able to open it. I didn’t think he’d actually hurt me. But people changed. And this Lake standing in front of me, wasn’t the same one I knew. Taking a step back, I relaxed my shoulders. “No. If nothing else, you four have taught me that you’re unhinged. You have two minutes to tell me why you’re here and then, you need to leave, or I’m calling the cops.” It soured my stomach to make that threat. He tutted and followed my step. “We’re not unhinged. You know that. We’re survivors. Just like you are.” “The way you all are, that’s not surviving.” I shook my head and took another step back. “Then what is it?” His voice softened. My back hit the wall. He knew precisely how to push my buttons. The one thing I could count on though, was that Lake never followed through. Not with me. “Why. Are. You. Here?” “Because this is what we do. We look out for each other.” Each word was a love note, one meant only for me. The ridiculous part of me loved this tone. I loved it before, until I wasn’t snowed by good intentions. “We won’t even talk about how you got yourself into this mess.” His jaw clenched and he turned to the side like he couldn’t look at me. When he did bring his gaze back, his eyes blazed. “Pack a bag, you’re coming with me before your f—buddy gets you offed.” I quaked with rage, the ugly feeling twining around my torso. “I’m taking care of this myself. I don’t need you to step in.” “Oh yeah?” he taunted. With the way his gaze shifted between my eyes, we were both remembering exactly how many times they stepped in when we were kids. But I hadn’t asked them to. I hadn’t needed them to. He braced both hands on the wall next to my head as he bent forward to bring his face level with mine. I pulled up my phone so I could dial the police. He snatched it from my grip and threw it hard across the room. We never broke our stare. “You didn’t answer why you’re here.” “Didn’t I?” “No. Why are you here?” My rage started to rise so high, it clogged my throat, making it difficult to swallow. “Because you’re ours.” I snorted but he ignored me. “You’re ours and it’s time you stopped running. No one else gets it. Or gets us. No one else matters. I can’t believe you—” He turned his head again. “Pack your bag. You’re coming with me. I need to make sure you’re safe while I deal with this idiot you let stick his — inside you.” 📚Snatched by Blake Blessing #DarkRomance #whychooseromance #morallygreymen
