I always thought it was because a princess would be used to only the finest things and such a life of comfort that even the slightest bit of discomfort would be unbearable. And that's how they could prove she was royalty. A fake would have considered all that fluff with the pea as the best mattress ever. Only a royal could be unsatisfied by such a minor inconvenience.
