Why we no longer do partial restorations. We get this question all the time. “Can you just replace the wheel arch?” “Can you fix the rocker?” “There’s some bubbling around the back glass—can you just repair that area?” Sometimes, yes, a localized repair really is localized. But when an unrestored classic starts showing multiple warning signs (rust bubbles, previous repairs, corrosion around the glass, deteriorating rockers, etc. )what you can see is often only a fraction of what’s actually happening underneath. That minor bubble around the rear glass might not just be a paint problem. Water may have been getting past the glass for years. Underneath, the window channel could be deteriorated. The trunk extensions or floor could be rusting. What looked like a small repair can quickly turn into something much larger once we start opening it up. This is exactly why we made the decision to stop doing partial restorations on cars that are clearly telling us they need more, and the alternative usually looks like this: Fix one area.
Six months later, another area bubbles.
Bring the car back.
Fix that.
Then something else appears. You keep spending money. The car keeps spending time in the shop. And neither you nor us ever really gets the satisfaction of knowing the car is done. Our goal at Motor City Metalcraft isn't to keep patching your classic indefinitely. Our goal is to give you a vehicle you can be proud of. A vehicle where every square inch has been inspected, repaired, cleaned and protected. A vehicle where we're willing to put our name behind the metalwork underneath the filler, primer and paint. Not just the parts everyone can see. A vehicle you can actually drive and enjoy instead of constantly wondering: “What’s going to go wrong next?” And ultimately, a vehicle capable of staying in your family long after we're finished with it. So when we tell someone that we won't take on a partial restoration, it isn't because the job is beneath us. It isn’t ego. It comes from pride in our work, and knowing that sometimes the most honest thing a restoration shop can tell you is that your car needs more than another patch. 🤘 #michigan #motorcity #classiccars #restoration
