If you’re new here, let’s start from the beginning. In the spring of 2019, I got a call from my dad. He told me that the current cow-calf operation was no longer profitable, and the farm was at risk of foreclosure. He asked if my husband & I would move back to Georgia, invest in the farm, and take over the operation & that’s exactly what we did. We quit our jobs and moved back home to run the family’s cattle operation. Two years later, we transitioned to a direct-to-consumer business model, selling and shipping beef directly from the farm. This shift was crucial in stabilizing the finances and restoring profitability. During this time, we made an offer to purchase just 1/4 of the property, hoping to secure a portion of the land. We were already paying above-market rent and wanted to build equity instead of wasting money on a lease. We had also made improvements to some of the land, based on my father’s informal implication that those investments would be credited toward the property’s value. For over a year, we negotiated with my father, who is a lawyer, without our own legal representation. Unfortunately, it became clear that no amount of money would satisfy him. We entered into an Option to Purchase Agreement (a legal contract to buy the property at a specified price within a certain timeframe) with an option fee of $30,000, which he later manipulated us out of, leaving us to absorb the loss. Despite the frustration, we continued to improve the operation and build the business. However, behind the scenes, the very man who stressed the importance of keeping the farm in the family and in trust for my three sisters and me, illegally transferred the land into an LLC. This maneuver reduced my share of the property, with two of my sisters—who have no involvement in the operation—owning the majority. He then parceled up the land and listed it for sale. Though heartbroken by this betrayal, my husband and I refused to give up on the business and the family farm. We fought back, placed a lien on the property, and halted the sale.
