🚨 Luís Figo on what he saw in Cristiano Ronaldo in 2003: “One day in 2001, I went to watch an Under-15 match, and that was when I saw a little boy who completely changed my understanding of football. He made the game look so easy that I started asking myself, even as a Ballon d’Or winner, whether football was really supposed to be that simple. People talk about Ronaldo scoring from the halfway line in 2008, but that ability didn’t start in 2008. He was already doing incredible things when he was playing Under-15 football. Then, in 2003, he was called up to train with the senior team. I remember our first training session together. That was when I knew this boy was going to go very far. I knew he was going to become someone special. Yes, I had played alongside great players like Ronaldo Nazário, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and many others. But when you see a young player with the potential to surpass even those names, you recognise it. I knew this boy could become greater than me. I didn’t need to tell him that, but I could already see it. His first training session told me everything. He had the confidence, the ego, the hunger and the mentality. He was ready to take over. He wanted to represent that badge, and he wasn’t afraid of playing alongside established stars. He wanted to send some of us into retirement! Before the next game, I knew we had to give him an opportunity. There was no way we could keep a young boy with that much potential on the bench. So I volunteered to be substituted to give him his opportunity. The rest is history. After training and playing alongside him for some time, I genuinely believed Portugal had a much better chance of winning the World Cup. We came close, reaching the semi-finals, but unfortunately, we couldn’t finish the job. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if the 2008 version of Cristiano Ronaldo had been playing alongside us. He was already special back then, but he hadn’t reached the level we would later witness. Today, I can say something without any hesitation: Cristiano Ronaldo is Portugal, and Portugal is Cristiano Ronaldo. You cannot write the history of this country without mentioning his name. We have seen what he has done for our nation, things that generations of Portuguese footballers could only dream of achieving. He carried our flag, gave our country a reason to dream and took Portuguese football to places we had never been before. But I must admit, Portuguese football will never be the same without Cristiano Ronaldo. A part of our history will be walking away with him. He remains the greatest players of all time, and I will always be proud that he came from my country.” [ This is the source @UTDAlex8 ]#portugal #cristianoronaldo #Soccer #creatorsearchinsights #capcut
