Middle managers are our communicators, connectors, and trust builders. Additionally, they are responsible for monitoring and interpreting a constant wave of information and championing our change initiatives. Nevertheless, they are often the last to get information, given the least amount of time to process and understand the why behind it, and the least prepared to explain it to their teams. A few years ago, I read about a study in the Harvard Business Review. Employees from around the world were asked a simple question: “What actions can leaders take to build trust with you?” Their top five answers are in the image above. Our middle managers operate closest to the action, and deepening their impact means giving them the tools, resources, and support to build that trust with their own teams. That starts with us doing these five things for them first. When the leaders in the middle feel trusted, they pass it on. That’s how a culture of radical ownership grows. Is that cool? Which of these five does your organization do well? Which one needs work?
