After more than 160 years, one of New York City’s most recognizable traditions could soon disappear from Central Park. 🐴🗽 Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin have backed a plan to phase out the city’s horse-drawn carriage industry by June 2028. The proposed legislation, known as Romanch’s Law, is scheduled for a City Council vote on October 22, 2026. Horse-drawn carriages have been part of New York City’s history since the 1800s, eventually becoming a popular tourist attraction, especially around Central Park. But the industry has faced years of controversy over animal welfare, traffic safety, and whether horses should continue working in such a busy urban environment. The latest push follows a tragic carriage accident in June 2026 that killed 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan. Under the proposed law, the city would develop programs to help carriage drivers find new employment and assist with finding humane homes for the horses. Animal welfare advocates see the proposal as a long-awaited change, while carriage drivers and owners worry about losing their livelihoods and businesses. If the legislation passes, tourists could have less than two years left to experience this historic New York attraction. Do you think ending horse-drawn carriage rides is the right decision, or should this longtime NYC tradition be preserved? #NewYorkCity #CentralPark #HorseCarriages #AnimalWelfare #NYC
