@vchan118: An Advisor on "Water Research" Reveals the Emperor’s Thoughts—Including Mentions of Princess Masako [Imperial Household Archive] (Broadcast in March 2018) The Crown Prince, who will ascend to the throne as Emperor next May, has found insights into what the role of the Emperor might look like in the coming era through his research on water. At the World Water Forum, currently being held in Brazil... The Crown Prince delivered a keynote address. "I would like to touch upon the importance of sharing water." Known for his research on water-related issues—including delivering a lecture at the United Nations—the Crown Prince has long dedicated himself to this field. Why has he chosen to focus on water issues? Women and children lining up in search of even a small amount of water—this is a photograph taken by the Crown Prince during his visit to Nepal in 1987. "He wondered, 'How much time does it actually take for them to fetch water? There are so many women and children... this must be truly difficult.'" This scene served as a catalyst, deepening the Crown Prince’s interest in water-related challenges. Hideaki Oda, who has served as an advisor for his research for many years, explains the significance of this: Mr. Oda: "I believe he holds the view that unless we learn to use or engage with water in the right way, humanity will be unable to solve the problems it faces—poverty and all the other issues that exist." Mr. Oda also notes that Princess Masako holds a special place for the Crown Prince. Mr. Oda: "When he speaks abroad, he chooses to use English to engage more directly with his audience. He consults with her on the nuances—the specific expressions to use. I recall him saying, 'Masako mentioned...'" It appears that the Crown Prince turns to Princess Masako—who is highly proficient in English—for advice on how to best express himself. Mr. Oda: "He (the Crown Prince, when speaking about Princess Masako) looks incredibly happy. Perhaps the two of them are creating various things together." At the World Water Forum—his final appearance in his capacity as Crown Prince—he concluded his keynote address by saying: "I hope that future generations will look back on the 21st century as an era of prosperity, peace, and happiness brought about by water."
