In a major commercial lease decision handed down by the High Court Commercial Division (Lady Justice Patience T.E. Rubagumya), Select Garments Limited won a long-running 10-year legal battle against its former landlord, Old Stanley Hotel Limited (trading as Forest Mall). ​Select Garments, owned by prominent businessman Robert Ahimbisibwe, was one of Uganda’s leading luxury fashion brands until May 2014, when the landlord abruptly locked up its flagship store at Forest Mall, evicted the company, and confiscated all suits, fixtures, and inventory over claims of unpaid rent. ​During the trial (Civil Suit No. 674 of 2014), Select Garments presented bank deposit slips from Stanbic Bank and Barclays Bank proving that both parties had mutually agreed to lower the monthly rent from $7,656 to $4,000, and that payments were consistently made on time. ​The court declared that the landlord committed an illegal eviction and unlawful conversion of property.
