North West businessman and former ANC regional treasurer Suliman Carrim remains behind bars after the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court further postponed his bail application today, Monday 19 October 2026, until Wednesday 28 October. The magistrate ordered the delay so he can review the transcripts of the proceedings, raising concerns that Carrim may have tailored his evidence. Carrim will continue to be held at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in the meantime. Carrim, aged 49, was arrested on the evening of Thursday 15 October at OR Tambo International Airport while preparing to board a flight to Dubai. He and his wife were reportedly heading to Saudi Arabia for what he described as a spiritual or religious journey. The arrest followed his repeated failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry after being subpoenaed to complete his testimony and hand over requested documents. He faces a charge of contravening the Commissions Act. The commission has welcomed the arrest as a warning to witnesses who fail to take the process seriously. During Friday’s bail hearing the State opposed his release, citing flight-risk concerns. Prosecutors pointed to disputed return-ticket arrangements, the five large bags he was carrying, and the need to verify his residential addresses across several provinces. Defence lawyers highlighted Carrim’s reported heart condition and anxiety, arguing that continued detention could trigger a panic attack. Carrim himself told the court he is “not a criminal” and insisted he always planned to return to South Africa. The matter was then postponed to Monday so the State could complete those verifications. Today’s additional postponement means the businessman will spend more time in custody while the court carefully examines the record. For ordinary South Africans watching high-profile cases involving powerful figures, every delay raises the same question: will the law be applied equally? JustAdvocacy will continue to follow the proceedings. Accountability cannot be postponed indefinitely. The public deserves a transparent process in which no one is treated as being above the law. #JustAdvocacy #MadlangaCommission #SulimanCarrim #AccountabilityNow #RuleOfLaw
