Exploring the amazing geology of Iceland with @Go Car Rental Iceland 🚗 🌊Day 1: - Leave early from Reykjavik - Geysir Geothermal Area: Strokkur was the geyser we saw erupt (every 4-8 minutes) - Gullfoss: Huge 2-step waterfall located on 3 intersecting faults; the gorge and falls formed during the last Ice Age - Seljalandsfoss: ~200’ (60m) waterfall over a hyaloclastite cliff - Skögafoss: another one of South Iceland’s famous waterfalls that flowed right into the sea about 10,000 years ago - Dyrhólaey: basalt sea arch and stacks formed from constant erosion on the shoreline - Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach: Columnar basalt, black basalt sand, and sneaker waves 😳 - Spend the night at Fosshotel Nupar This was a very long day with lots of driving, and ideally, I’d recommend not cramming all of this into 1 day like I did. It was just the only option for our schedule 😅 🧊Day 2 - Complimentary breakfast in the hotel - Ice Cave Discovery Tour with @Local Guide of Vatnajökull at Vatnajökull National Park (this is a must-do imo!) - Diamond Beach: black sand beach where chunks of ice bergs that look like huge diamonds get deposited on the shore - Leave to drive to Hveragerdi - Stop at Eldhraun Lava Field: 2nd largest lava flow in Iceland, and has a connection to the French Revolution - Checked into The Greenhouse Hotel in Hveragerdi 🌿 - Dinner in the food hall (we had Yuzu 🍔) 🌋Day 3 - Complimentary breakfast at the hotel - The Geothermal Exhibition: learned so much about geothermal energy on the Reykjanes Peninsula, which is right on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge! - Seltun Geothermal Area: saw mud pots, fumaroles, hot springs, and secondary minerals that form in geothermal areas - Back to Reykjavik Would you do this geologic Iceland road trip? 🌋 @Inspired by Iceland #southiceland @Visit Reykjanes Thank you @gocarrentaliceland for supporting my incredible first experience visiting Iceland, I can’t wait to be back! 🇮🇸 #geology #inspiredbyiceland #iceland #icelandroadtrip #geologist #icelandtravel #icelandgeology #icelandvolcano #geotourism #scicomm #sciencecommunication #womeninstem #WomenInScience #outdoorsy #naturelovers
