Low sperm motility or morphology? Look deeper. A semen analysis gives us several different pieces of information, and understanding how they fit together matters more than focusing on one percentage. Sperm concentration tells us how many sperm are present per millilitre. Total sperm count considers the number in the whole ejaculate. Semen volume measures the amount of fluid, which is different from sperm count. Motility describes movement, including whether sperm are moving forwards. Morphology assesses the proportion that meet strict criteria for shape. A low morphology result doesn’t automatically mean you can’t conceive. It needs to be interpreted alongside the other results, your medical history and both partners’ fertility assessment. So when someone asks me what they can take for low motility or morphology, my first question is: what could be contributing? In this video, I explain why I ask about smoking, vaping, cannabis, nutrition, heat exposure, occupation and overall health. Your medications, recent illness and hormonal health may also be relevant. Medical assessment can identify causes that need specific treatment, including a varicocele or hormonal disorder. We shouldn’t assume every abnormal result is a nutritional problem. Sperm DNA fragmentation is a separate test that may be considered in selected situations, such as recurrent pregnancy loss or unexplained infertility. It isn’t something every man needs, and an elevated result doesn’t determine the outcome of a pregnancy. Why do we often discuss a three month timeframe? Sperm development and maturation take roughly this long, so changes made today won’t be fully reflected in tomorrow’s sample. Repeat testing helps assess the pattern and response, although results can naturally vary between samples. I also discuss herbal medicine and supplements I may consider in individual cases. These require a review of suitability, evidence, dose and interactions. They aren’t a guaranteed fix, and more supplements aren’t automatically better. At Nourishing Apothecary, we support male preconception health through an individualised approach to nutrition, lifestyle and relevant test results, alongside appropriate medical investigation. Fertility deserves attention to both partners. Book with our fertility team or start with our free Find the Right Practitioner discovery call. Consultations are available in Liverpool, Sydney and Australia wide via Zoom. www.nourishingapothecary.com #MaleFertility #SpermMotility #SpermMorphology #TryingToConceive #NourishingApothecary
