A lot of career planning starts with the wrong question: “What job do I want next?” The problem is that a title tells you almost nothing about the life that comes with it. It does not tell you how your Tuesday feels, how much control you have, how much energy is left at 6 PM, or whether the work fits the person you are becoming. A better question is: - What do I want to be able to say about my life three years from now? Not: “I became a VP.” More like: “I work directly with people again.” “I control more of my week.” “I no longer manage a large team.” “I am known for something specific.” “I finish most days with enough energy for the rest of my life.” That shift sounds small, but it changes the entire career search. You stop chasing titles and start looking for evidence. Here is the exercise: Write five sentences you want to be true three years from now. Try to cover five areas: - Work: What do I spend my time doing? - Autonomy: What do I control? - Energy: How do I feel when work ends? - Money: What does work make possible? - Life: What can I do now that my current career makes difficult? Then make each sentence observable. “I want more freedom” is hard to design for. “I control at least two days of my week” is much clearer. “I want better balance” is vague. “I rarely work after 6 PM” gives you something real to evaluate. Now take every opportunity you are considering and ask: Does this make my five sentences more likely, unchanged, or less likely? That promotion with 20% more money might look great on paper. But if it also means more travel, a larger team, evening availability, and less control, it may actually move you away from the future you want. That is why “up” and “forward” are not always the same thing. The goal is not to build the most impressive résumé possible. It is to choose work that creates evidence of a life you actually want to live. A title is useful. But it is not the destination. Save this and write your five sentences before your next career search. What is one sentence you would love to be able to say three years from now?
