I think they attribute their being different as a superior quality or trait and not the narcissism that it actually is.

But it comes to a stage that when you talk to them, if it's lies, and the confusion comes when you don't know if what they saying is the truth. And if you question them to get straight answers they become defensive, and throw it back at you...

He was setting the stage. He just wanted you to map yourself out, he wasn't being vulnerable, he wanted you to explain how you work so he can emulate you, copy you. They don't have personality, they just mirror and rehash your stuff. I would be hard-pressed to find any original content in the narc who was in my own life or my narcissistic mother. My narc helped me understand my mother and my upbringing and I realised why I chose my narc and where everything came from and I was grateful to this man for helping me join the dots and then I was done.
