@padmini18_: In court, Suliman Carrim claims trip to Dubai was for spiritual upliftment. After being arrested on Thursday night at Or Tambo International Airport, Suliman Carrim argues that all he intended to do was to take a trip to Dubai for spiritual upliftment. Meanwhile, the state is opposing his bail, arguing that Carrim had planned to skip the country and never come back. Suliman Carrim was arrested by the Commission's Recommendations Task team for failure to appear at the commission several times. Dubai, as a destination for persons fleeing from the law in south Africa, would not be a first. The infamous Gupta brothers also took a trip to Dubai in fabruary of 2018 and never returned to South Africa. At the time, the two brothers were expected to testify at the Zondo commision regarding corruption allegations involving former president Jacob Zuma. The NPA, under the leadership of Shamila Batohi, had filed extraction papers for the brothers in 2023, but failed to get a working agreement with the Dubai court. If the argument by the state in Carrim's bail hearing is to be taken for a fact, Carrim would be acting a second sequel of the Gupta brothers' "Grand Escape" movie. For the charge of not appearing at the commission when he was summoned and subpoenaed to appear, Carrim is looking at either up to 2 years in jail, or agreeing to testify at the commision. #sulimancarrim #carrimincourt #madlangacommission #goviral #southafrica
