@officialgiftedgrace: 🏠⚠️ SCHIMMEL (MOULD) IN GERMANY: WHAT TENANTS SHOULD KNOW! 🇩🇪 Schimmel grows when there is too much moisture. Common causes include poor ventilation, insufficient heating, leaking pipes, water damage, or building defects. It can trigger allergies and worsen breathing problems. ✅ How to prevent it: Open your windows wide for a few minutes regularly, especially after cooking or showering. Keep rooms reasonably heated, avoid placing large furniture directly against cold outside walls, and remove excess moisture. ⚖️ Know your tenant rights: If you discover Schimmel, take photos and inform your landlord or property manager in writing as soon as possible. Under German law (§ 536c BGB), tenants must report defects promptly. The cause must be investigated because mould is not always the tenant’s fault. ⚠️ Don’t automatically assume you must pay for the repairs, and don’t reduce your rent without getting proper advice. Responsibility depends on the cause and circumstances. For serious mould, seek professional help and contact a Mieterverein (tenants’ association) if needed. Before renting an apartment, check the walls, window corners, bathroom and areas behind furniture.
