Elbert McGee, 63, was born in the house he still lives in. Roseland, Louisiana, population 1,100. Last August, the Smitty's Supply oil plant exploded and rained 12 million gallons of oil and chemicals over the town. A year later, McGee is still digging oily soil out from under his home. New roof. New siding. More than $20,000 of his own money, in a town where the median income is about $17,000 a year. His son Markel was 15 when the nosebleeds started, bad enough to keep him out of school. The doctor said it was normal and never examined him. To pay for it all, McGee drives more than an hour each way to a chemical plant in Cancer Alley. His words:
His words: "I know I'm killing myself with a job, but I didn't want my kids to be exposed too." And the detail that stays with you: McGee graduated high school with the plant's owner. They grew up together in the same small town. Today, he says, the man would walk right past him like he never knew him. He hasn't appeared publicly once since the explosion. He lives 25 miles away. The government says the town is safe. The ground under McGee's house says otherwise, and he keeps digging. #HustlersNTheHood
