SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, USA 🇺🇸 — A U.S. Air Force service member has died after falling during a rappelling demonstration before a college football game at the Alamodome on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The demonstration took place before the UTSA Roadrunners faced Navy during the university's annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game. Four military personnel were scheduled to descend from the stadium rafters. During the demonstration, one service member appeared to lose control while descending and fell to the field. Medical personnel immediately responded before the injured airman was transported to a local hospital. The Air Force later confirmed that he had died. The service member was assigned to Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron. The unit operates from Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis, while the squadron is headquartered at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. The incident delayed kickoff by approximately 10 minutes. The game continued afterward, but the tragedy affected the atmosphere inside the stadium. UTSA released a statement on October 17, saying:

The unit operates from Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis, while the squadron is headquartered at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. The incident delayed kickoff by approximately 10 minutes. The game continued afterward, but the tragedy affected the atmosphere inside the stadium. UTSA released a statement on October 17, saying: "We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the start of tonight’s football game. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the soldier who was affected, his family and his military colleagues. We recognize that members of our campus community may be emotionally affected by this incident and are activating wellbeing services to support our faculty, staff and students." After the game, UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor spoke about the change in the crowd's atmosphere. "There was something. You could just tell that the energy was just gone," Traylor said. "So I've never had to deal with anything like that before. So it just puts things into perspective." He later explained that he had not known the details before the game. "I didn't know anything," Traylor said. "I didn't know what to tell them. That's how I handled it." The Air Force confirmed that the incident remains under investigation. The service member's identity had not been publicly released in the reports reviewed. A solemn moment during a ceremony meant to honor military service has left the community mourning. #SanAntonio #TexasUSA #UTSA #Navy #JAPD
