I used to live in the country surrounded by farming fields. Everytime they plow or harvest, I would get mice. I used soak peppermint oil on cottonballs and put them in my cabinets and behind the couch (places pets/kids can't get to)..it provides a temporary deterrent for mice. You have to change out cottonballs weekly
