Same girl same!

87 MILLION VIEWS. Not a celebrity announcement. Not a viral dance. An online campaign attempting to expose the identity of a woman who reported an alleged gang rape at Cornell University. According to an October 17 Washington Post investigation, posts purporting to identify Jane Doe accumulated more than 87 MILLION views on X in just two weeks. That’s total views, not 87 million individual people. More than 2,700 accounts participated over ten days. And apparently, human beings weren’t enough. THE AI JOINED IN, TOO. Researchers found that X’s chatbot Grok repeated her purported identity at least 300 times. THREE HUNDRED. A woman seeks legal accountability, and an AI system reportedly helps circulate unverified identifying information about her. WHAT THE ACTUAL F*CK HAVE WE NORMALIZED? Facebook, Instagram and TikTok restricted searches for a purported name, though some posts remained accessible. X continued permitting searches. Meanwhile, Jane Doe has reportedly endured threats, harassment and a terrifying swatting incident at her family’s home. And the internet’s amateur detective squad? They’ve also targeted innocent people. At least three women were falsely identified as Jane Doe, according to her attorney. People who merely shared names with defendants faced harassment, too. CONGRATULATIONS. THE ONLINE MOB CAN’T EVEN IDENTIFY ITS TARGETS CORRECTLY. The court has already sealed documents amid concerns about dangerous doxxing. Yet the digital hunt continues. The allegations against the seven defendants remain contested. Investigating those allegations is the job of the legal system. Publishing private information, threatening families and terrorizing strangers isn’t justice. It’s harassment dressed up as public accountability. And there’s a larger question nobody should ignore. WHEN SOCIAL-MEDIA PLATFORMS AND AI SYSTEMS HELP AMPLIFY THIS BEHAVIOR, WHO THE HELL HOLDS THEM ACCOUNTABLE? A woman’s right to seek justice should not come with an internet-wide invitation to hunt her down. SHE FILED A LAWSUIT. NOT AN APPLICATION TO BECOME PUBLIC PROPERTY.
