@facetime.with.scientists: How does cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) work to "see" proteins and determine their three-dimensional structures? Cryo-EM uses not a visible light beam, but a beam of electrons (a much narrower beam!) to create images of proteins resting on a grid. Scientists then compute the protein's three-dimensional structure by combining thousands to millions of images of the protein sitting on the grid in different orientations and conformations. In this video, structural biologist Seraya Jones at Princeton explains how cryo-EM works to solve protein structures. Seraya uses cryo-EM to study the structures of various proteins important to the health of all the cells in our body.
