My parents recently passed away. Every year for the last 10 years, my mom would give us an envelope in January that had all of their burial information every bank account every place they had money every life insurance policy and an Excel spreadsheet with a password to everything.

As someone who works in a funeral home, I also always like to remind people, check your beneficiaries on your life insurance policies. You can pay your Funeral bill in most cases with a life insurance policy by taking a funeral home assignment. But if the beneficiary is not updated, or the beneficiary has passed away, it complicates a lot of things. Also put a beneficiary on your checking and savings accounts. That makes your account payable upon death and all you have to do is show the bank a death certificate and they will give you a check. It made it so easy when my own dad passed away. He had nothing else so we never had to get lawyers involved.

We have a living will and a trust. All of our accounts are listed under these two. Passwords would be smart to include in paperwork.

Also, make people beneficiaries on your bank accounts and put your home and big assets in a trust. Probate is awful, expensive, lengthy and such a headache.
