@wings_ny: Massachusetts doesn't just have history — it has places that history forgot. And they're terrifying. 1. Medfield State Hospital (Medfield) A massive Victorian asylum that housed thousands of patients for over a century. Now completely abandoned and open to walk the grounds. Hollywood noticed — scenes from "Shutter Island" were filmed here. The empty brick buildings and overgrown courtyards make it one of the most atmospheric abandoned sites on the East Coast. 2. Hoosac Tunnel (North Adams) A 4.75-mile railroad tunnel blasted through solid rock in the 1800s. Nearly 200 workers died during construction — locals called it the "Bloody Pit." The tunnel still exists and is still used by freight trains today. Paranormal investigators have been documenting strange activity here for decades. 3. Belchertown State School (Belchertown) A state school for people with developmental disabilities that operated from 1922 to 1992. A 1972 investigation exposed horrifying conditions inside. The buildings have sat empty ever since, slowly collapsing behind a chain-link fence. One of the darkest chapters in Massachusetts history. 4. Eyrie House Ruins (Holyoke) What remains of a grand 19th-century mountaintop hotel — destroyed not by neglect, but by a horse cremation that got out of hand and burned the whole structure down. The stone ruins sit on top of Mount Tom with panoramic views of the Connecticut River Valley. 5. Quabbin Reservoir (Central MA) To build Boston's water supply in 1938, the state literally drowned four towns — Enfield, Greenwich, Dana, and Prescott. Thousands of residents were relocated, cemeteries were moved, and the towns were flooded. On drought years, the old stone foundations still emerge from the water. 6. Metropolitan State Hospital (Waltham) Once the largest psychiatric hospital in Massachusetts with over 2,200 patients. Closed in 1992, most of the buildings were converted into condos — but the original asylum structures still stand abandoned on the grounds, slowly being swallowed by the trees.
