When the masseter and surrounding tissues hold excessive tension, they can influence tissue mobility and the mechanical environment of the lower face. And here’s something interesting about under-eye puffiness. The extracellular matrix around our facial fat compartments contains glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), molecules that attract and retain water. When fluid accumulates in the delicate midface and under-eye tissues, puffiness can become more noticeable. That’s why I like to work on the jaw as part of a broader approach to midface mobility and lymphatic and venous drainage. This exercise helps relax overworked jaw muscles, improve tissue mobility, and support the structures involved in healthy facial fluid movement. Of course, not every under-eye bag is caused by fluid accumulation. Facial fat distribution and anatomy matter too.
