In the 1920s, young women were hired to paint watch dials with glowing paint. It paid well. It felt special. And they were told it was completely safe. To keep their brushes sharp, they were taught one technique: “lip, dip, paint.” So every day… they put the brush in their mouths. And swallowed tiny amounts of radium. At first, nothing seemed wrong. Some of them even painted their nails and teeth for fun… watching themselves glow in the dark. But then… things changed. Their teeth began to loosen. Their gums started to rot. Some woke up to find pieces of their jaw… literally breaking apart. Doctors were confused. The companies denied everything. But inside their bodies, the radium was attacking their bones… from the inside out. By the time the truth came out— many were already dying. So the women did something no one expected. They fought back. Sick. Weak. Some with only months to live… They took their employers to court. And because of them, workplace safety laws were changed forever. They weren’t just workers. They were proof… that being told something is “safe” doesn’t mean it is.
