WHAT PEOPLE THINK: You’re one lonely worker surrounded by endless ocean, with nobody around for miles. THE REALITY: You’re living in a floating community! Depending on the installation, dozens or even hundreds of people may be working and living onboard, following the same daily routine. WHAT PEOPLE THINK: You eat every meal alone in silence. THE REALITY: You sit around shared tables, listening to stories, jokes, and friendly arguments about which chef makes the best food. The galley can become the social center of the rig. WHAT PEOPLE THINK: Once your shift ends, there’s absolutely nothing to do. THE REALITY: Depending on the facilities, you might hit the gym, play games, watch a movie, or simply sit with the crew and talk about life back home. WHAT PEOPLE THINK: You’re completely cut off from your family. THE REALITY: Some offshore installations provide internet or phone access, so you may be able to call or message home when the connection allows. But the signal and access can vary. WHAT PEOPLE THINK: Offshore life is easy because your meals and accommodation are covered. THE REALITY: The long shifts can be exhausting, and after a few weeks, you may start missing birthdays, family dinners, and even sleeping in your own bed. And that’s why the crew matters so much. People from different backgrounds come together, share meals, tell stories, and build friendships that can make life away from home easier.
