This fascinating botanical phenomenon is known as heterophylly, and it’s more common than you might think! Take sassafras, for example. One tree can produce oval, mitten shaped, and three lobed leaves. Horseradish is another example, producing broad basal leaves and narrower, sometimes deeply lobed leaves along its stems. But it also can be the latter with horseradish and be genetic (meaning a handed down trait) (example my plant) Chris told me that this specific clipping we re-grew is known for doing this when is comes close to dying back . But there’s another botanical term worth knowing: heteroblasty! While heterophylly describes the presence of different leaf shapes on one plant, heteroblasty refers to developmental changes in a plant’s growth, including changes in leaf shape as it matures. Some plants even change their leaf shapes in response to their environment, including sunlight, temperature, and whether they’re growing underwater! These differences aren’t necessarily signs of disease or damage. They’re often perfectly normal parts of plant development.
