An apology means very little when you're still refusing to tell the truth about what you did. You can't keep saying you're sorry while denying the details, minimizing the damage, and treating the person you hurt like they're wrong for remembering what happened. That's why some relationship conflicts never get resolved. She keeps bringing it up because the apology never addressed the actual problem. You acknowledged just enough to say you apologized, but every attempt to discuss the impact turns into another argument about your intentions, her memory, or whether she's making things sound worse than they were. Now she's having to defend her experience to the same person who caused it. That's how avoiding accountability damages trust. The original behavior hurt her, but the dishonesty afterward keeps reopening it. She starts questioning whether you actually understand what you did or whether you're more concerned about protecting your image than repairing the relationship. Healthy communication requires honesty, responsibility, and a willingness to hear how your choices affected someone without turning their pain into an accusation against them. Forgiveness and reconciliation can happen, but rebuilding trust requires more than saying the right words. The truth has to be acknowledged, and the behavior has to change. You can't expect someone to move forward while you're still asking them to accept a version of events that protects you from what actually happened.
