You can smile, go to work, answer messages, and carry on with your day while fighting a battle that nobody knows about. Sometimes, even getting through an ordinary day takes everything you have. Mental illness doesn't always look the way we imagine. Sometimes, it's the thoughts you can't quiet, the heaviness you can't explain, or the feeling that you've somehow lost touch with yourself. And when your mind becomes a place you struggle to live in, you start looking for a way to breathe. For me, that way is the Begena. There is something deeply personal about sitting with this instrument. The sound doesn't make every problem disappear, and it doesn't replace the help we sometimes need. But it can give you a reason to slow down, a moment to breathe, and a space where you don't have to pretend to be okay. One string at a time, you begin to listen. Not to the world, not to the noise, but to yourself. Maybe healing isn't always about making the pain go away.
