There are group chats that haven't had a new message in months, but nobody leaves them. The names are still the same. Someone's profile picture has changed, someone else hasn't been online in ages. Every now and then, an old photo appears in the media section, and it's hard not to stop and look at it. Everyone looked so different back then. Not necessarily younger in appearance. Just different. There was more to say, more time to waste, and somehow every stupid thing was funny enough to send to the group. Someone would text at midnight asking if anybody was awake. Five minutes later, three people would be arguing about something completely pointless. Nobody wanted to go to sleep first because that meant missing whatever happened next. And now? One person is working. Another is studying. Someone moved away. Two people haven't spoken properly since that argument nobody ever brought up again. Nobody officially ended the friendship. There wasn't a final conversation or some dramatic goodbye. The messages just became less frequent. At first, everyone said they were busy. Then birthdays passed with a short greeting. Someone sent a meme that got two reactions instead of twenty. Eventually, even the memes stopped. It's weird how a group of people who once knew every little detail about each other's lives can become strangers without actually deciding to. Sometimes one of them scrolls up through the old messages. Not even looking for anything specific. Just reading whatever comes up. There are arguments over games, terrible jokes, screenshots of conversations that made sense only to them. Someone had sent a voice message that lasted four minutes for a story that could have been told in twenty seconds. It's all still there. The messages haven't changed, but the people who wrote them have. Maybe that's why looking back feels a little uncomfortable. Those conversations belong to a time that can't really be visited anymore. Even if everyone came back and started talking tomorrow, it wouldn't be exactly the same. There would be new responsibilities, different worries, things that happened while nobody was looking. And there's no point pretending otherwise. Still, it would be nice to hear from them. Not because everything needs to go back to how it was. Just because sometimes a person wonders how everyone is doing. Whether the guy who was always making jokes is happy with his life now. Whether the quiet one ever found people he feels comfortable around. Whether anyone else remembers those evenings the same way. Maybe they do. Maybe they occasionally open the chat, type something, and delete it because they don't know how to begin after so long. Or maybe they've moved on and rarely think about it at all. That's possible, too. Not every friendship is meant to last forever, and the past doesn't become meaningless just because people stop being part of each other's lives. Some people were there for a particular version of someone. They knew the old jokes, the old problems, the things that mattered at seventeen. They were part of ordinary days that nobody thought would become something to miss. And even if they never speak again, that time still happened. The group chat will probably stay buried somewhere between newer conversations. One day, someone might accidentally send a message there, apologize, and disappear again. Or someone might finally ask if everybody wants to meet up. Who knows? For now, the last message is still sitting there, followed by months of silence. And nobody seems to have the heart to delete it. 🤍
