@sifisoh: 🌍🇿🇦 AFRICA WRAP | SA vs THE REST OF AFRICA: This one might surprise you. 😭 Today we’re talking about patriotism, political competence, national pride and the very dangerous business of becoming comfortable with dysfunction. Rwanda’s Formula 1 ambitions, Botswana’s refreshingly qualified leadership, Burkina Faso refining its own gold, Niger attracting investment, Uganda confronting corruption and Kenya reminding us that politicians can, in fact, go to prison. Some genuinely encouraging developments across the continent. 👏🏽 Then there’s Ethiopia, the DRC, Gayton McKenzie’s negotiating abilities, Bellarmine Mugabe’s audacity, and South Africa’s extraordinary ability to recycle people with questionable records into political careers. My biggest lesson this week? Stop allowing the most miserable corners of social media to set the standard for your country. You arrive with facts. They arrive with unlimited data and an emotional attachment to propaganda. My brother, you were never going to win that argument. 😭 But here’s the thing: I genuinely want Africa to win. ALL of Africa. Every country, every economy, every community. That doesn’t mean pretending our problems don’t exist or competing to see whose government is the least dysfunctional. National pride isn’t convincing yourself that your country is doing well. It’s caring enough to demand that it actually does well. And perhaps South Africans need to look in the mirror too. We cannot keep complaining about the calibre of our leaders while treating criminal records like political work experience. As Professor PLO Lumumba has famously argued, corruption and political ambition have a rather disturbing relationship on this continent. Africa will never realise its potential if we keep mistaking criticism for betrayal and denial for patriotism. Love your country. Love Africa.
